Recently I have been representing young male teenagers who have been arrested for carrying knives and offensive weapons. Most of these youngsters have been between the ages of 12 – 15 years old.
My role is to advise, but I also need to establish why they are in possession of such articles in the event there may be a legal defence available to them. However, more often than not; there is no reasonable explanation given. It just makes me think… “what the hell are you thinking?” But to be honest, I’m not sure if they are thinking because when you ask why, I’m told “I don’t know”.
My naivety had me thinking that young people routinely carrying weapons was a myth, but it’s not, it’s actually quite common. Knife crime is on the increase and consequently many young people are being killed for no real reason.
Have our young been brainwashed to the extent that they cannot see the consequences of their actions? Death and prison is a sad reality but it doesn’t seem to phase some people.
Many parents are clueless as to what their child is up to when they leave the house or even who they are with. My question is, what can we do to save the children from themselves?
How far do we go as parents to protect children from the darkness of the streets? I find that many parents have lost control and are so fed up that they switch off. I don’t have all the answers, but there needs to be an intervention?
How do you think this problem can be solved?
