The older I get, the less I care about pleasing others. Once upon a time I used to actually care about what other people thought of me. I wanted people to like me, to think I was a “good person” that I was “friendly”, “non threatening” and “non controversial”. I’m now free from that nonsense perspective and it’s actually quite liberating! You don’t like me? Well, I don’t care!
Whilst growing up I remember taking so much pride in being the politest little girl. I was bought up with such manners. Everything was “please”, “thank you” and “may I”, even when people were horrible to me. I am still extremely polite to others, and treat every person I meet with respect, but I now adapt my behaviour to fit the situation.
I cannot remember the turning point, but I know the penny dropped when I realised that firstly people take the absolute p**s, and secondly, many people are damn hypocrites. There are people who do you wrong and get upset when you call them out. I don’t know why, but many take a kind soul for weakness and their naive assessment couldn’t be more wrong.
I lose no sleep over people who don’t like me. I have faced too many situations where others really believed they could be disrespectful to me and I would stay silent. They were wrong. These situations have occurred not only in my personal life, but work life too. However, the more challenges I face, the easier it has become to speak out. And don’t think I only speak in defence of myself, I will happily speak up in the defence of others and will never be afraid to confront what is wrong.
I have principles that I feel strongly about, one of them being “Treat people in the same way you would like others to treat you”. It’s a beautiful principle and you can’t go wrong if you adopt it. I know I don’t treat others badly, so if you don’t like me, I don’t care.
I am a woman who encourages others to be the best person they can be in this life. I advise, uplift and offer guidance to anyone who wants to grow. I don’t stab others in the back or envy people for what they have, so if you don’t like all of the above, you know what? I DON’T CARE!
